Distances is a series in which musical time becomes physical space.

The starting point is always a short musical phrase—often only a few bars. Rather than representing music as an image, I take its internal structure apart: melody, accompaniment, and bass are separated and placed at different depths within the space. What is heard simultaneously in performance becomes a spatial experience, unfolding between foreground and background.

As a pianist, I know that a score is never played as a flat sequence of notes. Every performance creates layers: a melody moves forward, an accompaniment recedes, a bass grounds the whole. These relationships give music its depth, tension, and breathing space. In Distances, I translate this way of listening into material form through three distinct layers.

Distances proposes the score as a spatial object: a form that holds time within its layers, inviting the viewer to experience a brief musical moment simultaneously—as sound remembered, structure perceived, and space inhabited.
