MÚSICA CALLADA

My series Música Callada (Silent Music) is a tribute to Federico Mompou’s eponymous work, a collection of twenty-eight brief piano pieces composed between 1959 and 1967, characterized by their expressive austerity, almost whispered intimacy, and a use of silence as significant as sound itself. Each drilled hole in the felt corresponds precisely to a specific note from his scores, transforming sound into visual absence.

I chose felt for its ability to absorb sound. I use negative space—the voids between perforations—as the primary element where the music lives, inviting viewers to a contemplative, tactile experience that reflects the profound simplicity and meditative essence of the original composition.
